Brockton District Court

The Brockton District Court is the main court for criminal cases in the city. It handles misdemeanors, violations, and lower-level felony arraignments for Brockton and several nearby towns. The court also handles restraining orders, civil matters, and small claims. If you need to look up a case, the clerk's office can help you find it in person, or you can search online using the state's public docket tool.

The court serves Brockton, Abington, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, and Whitman. This matters if you're trying to figure out which court holds a case — anyone arrested in those towns will have their case in this courthouse unless it was moved to Superior Court.

Massachusetts offers a free public case lookup tool at masscourts.org. You can search by name, case number, or court. The results show case status, charges, and scheduled hearings. This tool covers both district and superior court cases from across the state, including Brockton and Plymouth County.

The state Trial Court also has a general search page at mass.gov where you can find dockets and calendar listings. These tools don't replace a full CORI report, but they're a good first step if you just want to check whether a case is on file.

Keep in mind that not every record is public. Sealed cases, juvenile records, and records that were expunged won't show up in the free public search. For a more complete look, you'd need to go through DCJIS and request an official CORI report.

Plymouth County Superior Court — Brockton

Serious felony cases in Plymouth County are handled by the Superior Court, and all criminal sessions for Plymouth County are held right in Brockton. This is where cases get tried after a grand jury indictment. If a case started in District Court but was upgraded, it moves here.

CORI — Criminal Offender Record Information

CORI stands for Criminal Offender Record Information. It's the official state system for background checks in Massachusetts. The Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) manages CORI and handles all official requests. Anyone can request their own CORI report. The fee is $25 per request, though people who can't afford it can ask for a fee waiver by filing an Affidavit of Indigency.

You can request your own CORI or check your record through the CORI page on mass.gov. The iCORI online system makes it possible to submit requests and pay the fee without visiting an office. DCJIS is based in Chelsea but serves all of Massachusetts, including Brockton.

CORI records include arrests, charges, and dispositions from courts across the state. A record in Brockton District Court will show up in a CORI check. So will a record from Plymouth County Superior Court. The report won't include cases that have been sealed or expunged under state law.

Brockton Police Department Records

The Brockton Police Department keeps its own records that are separate from the court system. These include incident reports, arrest logs, and police-generated documents. Public records requests go through the department directly. Not all police records are public — some are withheld when they relate to ongoing investigations or juvenile matters.

Address7 Commercial Street, Brockton, MA 02301
Phone(508) 941-0234

Under the Massachusetts Public Records Law, you can request police reports in writing. The department has up to 10 business days to respond, or 25 days if there's a valid reason for delay. If you want an incident report involving yourself, bring a photo ID when you visit. For reports involving others, some information may be redacted.

Massachusetts law allows people to seal or expunge certain criminal records. Sealing hides your record from most employers and the public, but it stays in the official state system. Expungement actually removes the record. Both options are available under state law, though each has its own rules and waiting periods.

Sealing is governed by MGL c. 276 § 100A. For a misdemeanor, there's a three-year waiting period after the case ends. For a felony, the wait is seven years. The waiting period runs from the end of any incarceration, probation, or parole, whichever is later. You file the petition at the court where the case was heard — so for most Brockton cases, that's the District Court on Main Street or the Superior Court on Belmont Street.

Expungement is available in more limited circumstances under MGL c. 276 §§ 100E–100U. Cases from when someone was under 21 years old may qualify if the offense meets certain criteria. Cases involving misidentification, fraud on the court, or where charges were ultimately dismissed may also qualify. A judge has to approve expungement, and the process takes time. The clerk's office at the relevant court can tell you what forms are needed.

Legal aid may be available if you can't afford an attorney. The Plymouth County Bar Association and local legal aid organizations sometimes offer clinics or advice for sealing petitions.

Plymouth County DA and Sheriff

Two other agencies play a role in how criminal records are created and managed in Brockton. The Plymouth County District Attorney's office prosecutes cases in both courts here. The Sheriff's office operates the jail and handles some inmate records.

If you need records from the DA's office — like case files or disposition letters — you can submit a public records request by email or mail. The sheriff's records relate to people housed in Plymouth County's correctional facilities. These aren't the same as court records, but they can be useful in some situations.

Sex Offender Registry in Brockton

The Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB) maintains the list of registered sex offenders in Massachusetts. You can search for offenders by name or location on the SORB website. The registry is separate from CORI. Anyone can access it at no cost. Offenders are classified by level — Level 1, 2, or 3 — and public access depends on the level assigned.

For Brockton specifically, registered offenders living or working in the city appear on the public registry if their classification allows it. Level 3 offenders (highest risk) are always publicly listed. Level 2 offenders may be listed depending on circumstances. Level 1 offenders are not publicly searchable.

Victim Notification — VINE

VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) lets crime victims track the custody status of people who were charged in their cases. You can sign up at vinelink.com to get alerts when an offender is released, transferred, or escapes from custody. The service is free and available 24 hours a day. It covers Plymouth County Correctional Facility and other state correctional facilities.
