Lynn District Court

The Lynn District Court handles criminal cases for Lynn and several surrounding communities. This is where misdemeanor cases begin and where many lower-level felony arraignments take place. If someone was arrested in Lynn, Marblehead, Nahant, Saugus, or Swampscott, their case very likely started here. The court also holds hearings for restraining orders, violations of probation, and civil matters.

You can visit the clerk's office to look up cases in person. Staff can search by name or case number and tell you what's on the docket. The court is on Essex Street — a busy spot, so parking nearby is limited. Plan extra time if you're going in person.

Lynn District Court criminal records Essex County Massachusetts

The Lynn District Court on Essex Street is the primary venue for local criminal cases. Contact details and services are listed on the court's official state page.

The quickest way to look up a criminal case connected to Lynn is through masscourts.org. This is the free public docket system for Massachusetts courts. You can search by name or case number and see charges, case status, and scheduled court dates. It covers both District Court and Superior Court records from across the state.

The Massachusetts Trial Court also has a search tool at mass.gov. These free tools are a good starting point for basic case lookups. They won't show sealed or expunged records, and they're not the same as a full CORI background check. But for finding out whether a case exists in the public record, they work well.

If you need a complete official criminal history, you'll need to go through DCJIS and the iCORI system. That process is described below. The two systems serve different purposes, and most people use the free court search first before deciding whether to go further.

Essex County Superior Court

When a criminal case in Lynn involves a serious felony, it eventually moves to Essex County Superior Court in Salem. This court handles cases that were indicted by a grand jury. Verdicts and sentences from these cases become part of the permanent court record, and you can request certified copies of documents from the clerk's office.

Salem is about 10 miles from Lynn. If you're looking for a superior court case, call ahead to confirm the file is at this location. Some older records may have been archived or transferred. The clerk can tell you what's available and how to request copies.

CORI — Criminal Offender Record Information

CORI is Massachusetts' official system for criminal record information. It's run by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services, or DCJIS. The system covers criminal charges, arrests, and case outcomes from courts across the state, including Lynn District Court and Essex County Superior Court.

Anyone can request their own CORI. You don't need a reason — it's your right under state law. The fee is $25, and it's paid when you submit through the iCORI online portal. If you can't afford it, you can file an Affidavit of Indigency to ask for a waiver. DCJIS handles all requests, whether you're in Lynn or anywhere else in Massachusetts.

For more detail on what CORI covers and how the request process works, see the CORI information page on mass.gov. And for the law itself, the CORI law overview explains your rights and what agencies can and can't do with your record.

Lynn Police Department Records

Police department records and court records are separate. The Lynn Police Department maintains its own files — incident reports, arrest records, and other documents created by the department. If you need a police report, you request it from the department directly, not from the court.

Requests go through the department's public records process. Under the Massachusetts Public Records Law, the department has 10 business days to respond (up to 25 days with valid notice). For reports involving yourself, bring a photo ID. Some records may be partially redacted if they involve other individuals, minors, or active investigations. If your request is denied, you can appeal to the Secretary of State's office.

Essex County Sheriff — Criminal Record Files

The Essex County Sheriff's Office is based in Middleton and manages the county jail and house of correction. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation at the sheriff's office maintains over 300,000 criminal record files. These records relate to people who have been in the county correctional system and are separate from court case records.

Phone(978) 750-1900

If you need records related to someone's time in Essex County's correctional facilities, contact the sheriff's office directly. These records are not available through the court system or DCJIS. The sheriff's records are useful in cases involving incarceration, sentence completion, or jail-based programming.

If you have a criminal record in Lynn or Essex County, you may be able to seal or expunge it. Sealing removes the record from public view while keeping it in the state system. Expungement deletes it entirely. Both options are available under Massachusetts law, though each comes with conditions and waiting periods.

For sealing, the law is found at MGL c. 276 § 100A. Misdemeanors can be sealed after three years; felonies after seven. The clock starts at the end of any incarceration, probation, or parole. You file the petition at the court that handled the case. For most Lynn cases, that's the District Court on Essex Street. For Superior Court cases, you'd petition in Salem.

Expungement is governed by MGL c. 276 §§ 100E–100U. It's available in more limited cases — typically for offenses committed before age 21, or when the case involved misidentification or fraud. A judge must approve it. The clerk at the relevant court can give you the forms and walk you through the filing process. Free or low-cost legal help may be available through local bar associations or legal aid programs in Essex County.

Sex Offender Registry

The Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB) keeps the public registry of registered sex offenders in Massachusetts. You can search by name or location at the SORB website. The registry is free and separate from the CORI system. It shows offenders classified as Level 2 or Level 3 — the higher-risk categories. Level 1 offenders are not listed in the public search.

Lynn residents can search for registered offenders in the city or nearby areas. If you're looking for someone specific, a name search works best. Location-based searches show offenders currently living or working in a given area.

Victim Notification — VINE

Crime victims can track an offender's custody status through VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday). Register at vinelink.com to get alerts when someone is released, transferred, or escapes from a correctional facility in Massachusetts. The service is free and available at any hour. It covers Essex County's correctional facilities and the state prison system.
