Newton Overview
Newton District Court
The Newton District Court handles all misdemeanor and most felony arraignments for Newton cases. It is the first stop for most criminal records that originate in the city. The court serves Newton only, which makes it relatively focused in scope. If you need records from a Newton case, the clerk's office at this location is the right place to start. They can confirm whether a case file is available and what you need to bring to get a copy.
The court also runs an Adult Drug Court program. Cases diverted through that program may have a different record trail than standard criminal cases, so it's worth asking the clerk if a case you're searching for went that route.

Search Newton Criminal Records Online
Massachusetts has a public case lookup tool through the Trial Court. You can search by name or case number and get basic docket information for Newton District Court cases. The system shows case status, charges, and scheduled hearing dates. It does not always include full disposition details, so in-person requests are sometimes needed for complete records.
The main search portal is at mass.gov/search-court-dockets-calendars-and-case-information. This tool covers district, superior, and other trial court divisions across the state. For Newton cases, you can filter by court to narrow results. Keep in mind that sealed or expunged records will not appear in the public search.
For a formal background check, the state uses the CORI system. CORI stands for Criminal Offender Record Information and is managed by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services. A standard CORI request costs $25 and gives you a certified report of a person's Massachusetts criminal history. You can request your own CORI through iCORI at mass.gov/massachusetts-criminal-offender-record-information-cori.
Middlesex County Superior Court
Serious felony cases from Newton may move up to the Middlesex County Superior Court. That court handles cases where a grand jury has indicted someone or where a defendant has requested a jury trial on a felony charge. The Superior Court for Middlesex County is located in Woburn.

If you're searching for a Newton criminal record involving a serious charge, check both the district court and the Superior Court. Some cases start at the district level and transfer up. The online case search tool covers both court levels, so one search can catch both.
Newton Police Department Records
The Newton Police Department keeps its own records, separate from the court system. Police records include arrest logs, incident reports, and booking information. These are not always the same as court records. An arrest might appear in a police record but not result in any court filing. Conversely, some court cases begin with state police or other agencies and won't appear in Newton PD's own files.
To request records from the Newton Police Department, contact the records bureau directly. They handle public records requests under the Massachusetts Public Records Law. Some requests can be made by phone, but a written request is often faster and creates a paper trail. Response time varies, but the law requires a response within ten business days.

CORI in Massachusetts
CORI is the official state system for criminal history records in Massachusetts. It is run by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services, or DCJIS. Anyone can request their own CORI. Authorized employers, landlords, and agencies can also request CORI on others, subject to rules about how it can be used and disclosed.
The DCJIS iCORI portal handles online requests. You set up an account, verify your identity, and submit a request. The report comes back digitally. For Newton residents or anyone with a Newton case history, the CORI report will show court appearances, charges, and case outcomes tied to their record in Massachusetts. The DCJIS can be reached at (617) 660-4640. More information about the CORI process is at mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-law-about-criminal-records-cori.
Not all records show up on a standard CORI. Juvenile records, sealed records, and expunged records are not visible to the public or most employers. If you believe a record is incorrect, DCJIS has a process to dispute the information.
Sealing and Expungement
Massachusetts law allows some criminal records to be sealed or expunged. Sealing means the record is hidden from most public and employer searches, though it still exists. Expungement means the record is permanently destroyed. Both processes have waiting periods and eligibility rules tied to the type of offense and the outcome of the case.
Sealing is governed by MGL c. 276 § 100A. Expungement is handled under MGL c. 276 §§ 100E through 100U. The waiting period for sealing a misdemeanor is three years after the case closes. For a felony, it's seven years. Expungement has stricter limits and applies mainly to cases where the charge was dismissed or the person was found not guilty, or to certain offenses committed as a juvenile.
Once a record is sealed or expunged, it should not appear in standard Newton criminal records searches or CORI reports for most purposes. If you are trying to seal or expunge a Newton record, you can file a petition at the Newton District Court. The court has forms and staff who can explain the process. Legal aid organizations in Middlesex County can also help if you qualify for free services.
Sex Offender Registry
The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board, or SORB, maintains a public list of registered sex offenders in the state. You can search by name or location at mass.gov/orgs/sex-offender-registry-board. The registry is separate from the CORI system and does not require a fee to search. Newton residents and property owners use this search to check on offenders in their area.
SORB classifies offenders as Level 1, 2, or 3 based on risk. Level 1 offenders are not listed publicly. Level 2 and Level 3 offenders appear in the public registry. The Newton Police Department also has access to full registry data for law enforcement purposes.
Victim Notification — VINE
VINE, which stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday, lets crime victims track the custody status of offenders in Massachusetts. The service is available through vinelink.com. You can sign up for automatic alerts when an offender's status changes, such as when they are released or transferred. This is a free service and does not require a CORI request.
