About Middlesex County Courts

Middlesex County no longer has a functioning county government. The county was abolished in 1997, so there is no county clerk or county-level record office. All Middlesex County criminal records are held by the state court system. The Superior Court handles the most serious felony cases. District courts handle misdemeanors, lower-level felonies, and civil matters under $50,000. For most people searching for Middlesex County criminal records, the right starting point is figuring out which town the case was filed in, then finding the court that serves that town.

The free public case search tool at masscourts.org lets you search by name, case number, or citation across all Middlesex courts. You don't need to create an account. Results show basic case data: the charges, the court, the filing date, and the current status. For more detail, like full docket entries, filings, or certified copies, you need to contact the clerk's office directly.

Middlesex Superior Court Criminal Records

The Superior Court handles the most serious Middlesex County criminal records, including all first-degree murder cases and major felonies. There are two Superior Court locations serving Middlesex County.

The Woburn location, opened in 2008, serves most of the eastern part of the county including communities around the Route 128 corridor. If you are not sure which location holds a case, call either clerk's office and they can direct you.

How to Get Middlesex County Criminal Records

There are a few ways to get Middlesex County criminal records. The right method depends on what you need and how much detail you want.

For basic case information, the free search at masscourts.org is the easiest option. It covers all Massachusetts courts including all Middlesex locations. You can search by name or case number and see charges, filing dates, and case status without paying anything or registering. This works well for confirming whether a case exists or checking the outcome of a specific matter.

For a full criminal history report, the state's iCORI system is the official source. CORI stands for Criminal Offender Record Information. It is maintained by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) and covers arraignments, charges, dispositions, and sentences for cases filed in Massachusetts courts. The standard fee is $25 per subject. If you are requesting your own record, that same search is free once per year. The CORI information page explains what is included and how to request a report.

Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 6, Sections 167 through 178, access to CORI is regulated. Not everyone can pull a full CORI report on someone else. Certain categories of employers, agencies, and organizations have different access levels. Individuals always have the right to request their own record.

For certified court documents, like a copy of a judgment or a certified docket, you need to contact the specific clerk's office that holds the case. Bring or send the case number, the defendant's name, and your payment. Certified copies from Middlesex courts cost $20 per document, with additional per-page fees for longer records.

If a case resulted in a dismissal or a not guilty finding, the defendant may be eligible for immediate sealing under MGL c. 276 Section 100C. For older convictions, sealing is available after five years for misdemeanors and ten years for felonies under Section 100A. Records that qualify for expungement are covered under MGL c. 276 Sections 100E through 100U. If you are trying to find whether a record has been sealed or expunged, that information typically won't appear in a public search.

The Middlesex County Sheriff's Office runs the Middlesex County House of Correction at 269 Treble Cove Road in North Billerica. The facility holds people serving sentences of up to two and a half years as well as pre-trial detainees.

Unlike some county jails in Massachusetts, the Middlesex County Sheriff does not have an online inmate search tool. To find out if someone is currently held at the facility, call (978) 667-1711. You can also use the VINE notification system at vinelink.com, which tracks inmate status at facilities across the state and can send you alerts when a person's custody status changes.
