What Hampden County Criminal Records Contain

Court records in Hampden County capture the full arc of a criminal case. At the district court level, you'll find the initial complaint, arraignment details, bail orders, and any continuances or hearings. If a case goes to Superior Court, the record expands to include indictments, pre-trial motions, trial transcripts, verdicts, and sentencing orders. Probation terms, fines, restitution amounts, and any appeals are also part of the file.

A CORI, or Criminal Offender Record Information report, pulls from the statewide database and covers all of this plus more. It shows charges even when they ended in dismissal or a not-guilty finding. Continued-without-a-finding dispositions, commonly called CWOFs, appear on a CORI for a set period. Probation and warrant data are included too. The CORI system is statewide, so a report covers Hampden County records alongside any other Massachusetts court records tied to the same person.

Retention rules matter when you're searching old records. Superior Court criminal files are kept permanently. District Court criminal files are held for 10 years after a case closes. Juvenile records are sealed until the subject reaches age 27, with some exceptions based on charge type and case outcome.

Getting a Hampden County CORI Report

CORI reports for Hampden County residents or anyone with Massachusetts criminal history are issued through the state's iCORI system. The system is managed by DCJIS, the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services, from its office in Chelsea. You don't request a CORI through the local court; you do it online through the statewide portal.

To get your own CORI, visit the CORI information page at mass.gov and create an iCORI account. Your first request each year is free. Each additional request costs $25. If you can't afford the fee, ask the clerk at any Hampden County courthouse for an Affidavit of Indigency form, which can waive the cost if you qualify.

More detail on the law governing CORI access and privacy is on the Massachusetts CORI law page at mass.gov.

Sealing and Expungement in Hampden County

Massachusetts gives people a real path to clean up old criminal records. Sealing is covered under MGL c. 276 § 100A. For a misdemeanor conviction, you wait five years from the end of your sentence. For a felony, the wait is ten years. Once the waiting period passes, you file a petition at the court that handled your case. There is no fee to file a sealing petition.

Dismissals and not-guilty findings are handled separately. Under § 100C, these can often be sealed right away. If your Hampden County charge was dismissed or you were acquitted, you may qualify for immediate sealing without any waiting period at all.

Expungement goes further. Under MGL c. 276 §§ 100E through 100U, a qualifying record can be fully deleted from the state system. The eligibility rules are narrow. Expungement is mainly available for offenses that no longer exist as crimes or for cases where the person was a juvenile. Not all Hampden County records will qualify, but it's worth looking into. The clerk at the Springfield District Court or Superior Court can tell you what forms to file.

Springfield and Chicopee Police Records
